MANNERING PARK SAILING CLUB Catamaran Report 1 March 08 Club Championships Races 7 & 8
South-easterlies to 30 knots made a mess of the fleet with many capsizes, some twice, and one big cat going over in spectacular style in the first gust after leaving the shallows. The racing was keen and exciting with most cats finishing the two races. I didn’t tip over but I did forget to put my bungs in, which made my Windrush handle very badly till I got it back to shore.
Brenton has put together a new table of championship results to accommodate a new handicapping rule. Also here is a short explanatory note from Brenton about the system: There are ten races in the series. For the A fleet Race Seven wasn't run due to lack of wind. For B & C Fleet race 6 & 7 wasn't run due to lightning/storm. There are ten races in series. After eight races, a competitor can drop their worst race result. After nine races they can drop the two worst and after ten races, a competitor can drop their three worst results. A race is held when the start boat completes the sequence of starting and finishing. A race abandoned is not re-run. So you can see from the current results it really depends on the last two races as to who gets the big prizes. Brenton
And who turns up every week by the look of it. More Point Score races next week. Thanks to Dave for the website work. Danny

Cat Report for Saturday 26th Jan. 2008 Ronnie walsh had his last sail before heading to WA until his return this year. Darcy couldnt keep it up on a Taipan and hit the drink as did Tony Toohey. Jason piloted Darcy's Nacra in the second race while Darcy hopped on the Taipan. A good turn up of Taipans, but were not club members and didnt come into the results. Knottage about 8-12 easterly. Tazza and Shazza on the start boat. Next Saturday, 14fters to Budgewoi for Stan Vitnell regatta. "A" fleet at Manno Park for Championship Series. Bret Horde has flown in especially to for the championship race and maybe to see his family as well. 14ft Cats will have championship Series on 9th Feb Brenton |

Catamaran Report 5 Jan 08 and 12 Jan 08
Welcome back for 2008. A couple of news items: first, the fourteen foot cats have been divided into a B class and a C class to separate the gun skippers from the other poor sods to make a fairer and more interesting competition. We’ll all sail together but the results will be separate.
Secondly, Kate Beemster had a nasty accident while sailing with Robin in the Nationals over Xmas at Port Stephens and lost the top of her ring finger in the rigging (chain plate) and will be out of action for the rest of the season. The excellent organisation at the race had Kate off the boat and into hospital while Robin was still trying to right his new NACRA in the very windy conditions.
The first race of Series 2 on 5 January comprised only 7 cats, starting off the clock on individual handicaps, the back markers like Jason conceding over 30 minutes to some cats. This makes an interesting race with the slower sailors up the front for a change, and dicing with the faster skippers as they catch up. In this race Dominic proved too good for the others who failed to catch him. Danny managed to hold onto 2nd, making up 3 minutes on Dom. Jeff and Tony had a close finish, although Jeff missed the start by a couple of minutes and would have done better. Chris Blackford screamed through the pack and would have finished about 3rd except he didn’t round a mark properly and disqualified himself. Chris has improved a lot recently and thankfully is in Class B. Karl struggled in the conditions in the Mozzie, but won his class.
The following week 12 Jan the big cats all DNF the first race as they headed for the wrong windward mark. As John Roy says, never follow me. In the second race John on Attacka won by miles with Tony Kros 2nd and Mark Grainger the only other finisher in the very windy conditions. In the B class 14s, John Merle was the fastest and finished 2nd on handicap. Jason was next across the line, 3rd on handicap, and Ronnie Walsh, back from holidays, took first on corrected time. Stuey sailed well but capsized and ruined his result. The C graders enjoyed themselves in the brisk breeze, with Jerry taking the honours, with Jeff, Danny and Dominic not far behind. Brenton and Darcy assisted with the organisation and their help is appreciated.

What a fantastic sailing day! 18-23 knots (see Seabreeze graph below between 2.00pm and 4pm)! Welcome back to John Roy who has been AWOL since last season. With Matthew as crew on Attacka he blasted home first by 6 minutes from Keith and Barb, followed 2 minutes behind by Teem Beemster. At the speeds they were going, that must have been some distance. Kershy wasn’t far behind, with Nigel and new volunteer crew Marcus a fair way back. Nigel won on handicap (cruel, isn’t it, John?) but as he wasn’t at the Presentation we gave the mug to young Marcus. The fourteens had a handicap start, and the back markers found it hard to catch up with up to 33 minutes to make up. Chris Blackford sailed very well making up 16 minutes to come 3rd behind Danny who did his best to stay ahead of everyone. Only Jeff Main passed him, doing it twice to prove a point, after dipping his mast in the mud. John Merle was 4th with the best time after starting off scratch. Jason and Brenton sailed brilliantly too but were relegated by harsh handicaps. Better see the Handicapper, boys! Darcy gave it a good go, placing between the Smith boys Dom and Israel who both need a little more practice, which they’ll get sailing from and to Brightwater for the race every week. Well done everyone! Next week is the last race of the series, with the Xmas party on Sunday 23rd. Don’t forget the Toukley Xmas Regatta on December 28/29/30. See the Toukley website www.geocities.com/toukleysc/ .

Some great racing happened this week with 10-15 knots E-NE on a course in Chain Valley Bay. A Club Championship day so two consecutive short races were held (not back-to-back) with about 20 boats participating. The results are elsewhere shown, along with the progressive scores for the championship. It was nice to see Linda Lee back after a big absence. Unfortunately she had forgotten how to tack and gave it away during the first race. She did better than Rimmo tho, whose mast fell down before the first start. Moral: if someone helps you to rig the boat – check everything. Anyway Rimmo took Linda’s boat out for the 2nd race and did very well. Danny and Team Beemster nearly had a nasty T-bone collision while both on a port tack. Last second evasive action with hulls just kissing avoided the devastation that would have resulted. Steve Halliday’s Paper Tiger did not appear having been written off the previous week by a teen-age driver in the Lake Haven car-park. I hope you’ve all got Comprehensive insurance on your boats. (Social Day-No Race) Catamarans Saturday 17/11/2007 When the Cat’s away… Darcy was absent at an anniversary, so we, ie Brenton, decided on a social day, rather than racing with a reduced fleet. The plan was a proper start in front of the clubhouse (to make it look official) and then a reach up to Sugar Bay, around a post in the middle of the Bay, then to another post near Wollstonecroft, and a re-group at Sunshine beach (Casuarina Point). With a fair bit of cheating, we all finished up on the beach, except for Israel and Dom Smith, who as young beginners were excused in the rough conditions (15-20 knots NE) and kept going home to Brightwaters, next to Sugar Bay. In the north-easterly it was hard to keep the cats on the beach at Casuarina Point (I’ve been looking at my map), so they had to be dragged right up on the stony shore, or held by the reins in the sharply-deepening water. Paul Beazley, Karl Herman and Nigel and Mark had their 16 footers, and the fourteens fleet comprised John Merle, Jason and Lachie, Ian, Jack Langlois (Paper Tiger), Jeff Main, Brenton, Danny, Jerry, Warren Pepper on his hot Windrush, Steve Halliday on his Paper Tiger (in his element in the blowy conditions) and Nick Quinsey. All will receive 2 points for turning up. Brenton wisely decided not to send us up round Pulbar, which could have been a dangerous place for some of us. Instead we went back to Chain Valley Bay and reached back and forth for an hour or so then headed back for a well-earned sausage sanger and a beer. It’s back to normal next Saturday with Races 4 & 5 in the Club Championships. Don’t forget it’s polling day, so vote early, or better still, have a pre-poll vote this week (you’ll be “travelling under conditions” on the day). Danny

Catamarans Saturday 20/10/2007 A warm day with winds E swinging to NE later at 15 knots dropping to 10 knots for the second race, as demonstrated by the times being 8 minutes longer. Speaking of dropping, Sharon’s beautiful digital camera with 130 top photos from the day’s racing plunged to the murky depths after she left it on the edge of the roof of the start boat while trying to take a self-portrait. John Merle showed the fourteens a clean pair of rudders, closely followed by Jason Kakato who, now he is 13, will turn into an obese teenager which should slow him down a bit. Well done John and Jason. Brenton was third in both races with Jack next on his paper tiger. Young Chris Blackford did well in the first race, beating Darcy who was trying out Max’s Windrush. Nick Quinsey did well, having a good dice with Tony Toohey. Jerry improved remarkably second time round. I stayed at the back taking notes for this report. Richard Campbell dominated the big cats with 2 wins. Richard and Tony Kros are competing in the Taipan State’s titles next weekend so best of luck you blokes. Phil Brander was second in both races, only seconds ahead of Team Beemster. Nigel and Kathy were the sole representatives of the Hobie brand on their 16. Danny |
